Why I am campaigning to improve Girton Interchange
We need to make sure gridlock does not become a way of life for residents who rely on this junction. Work on this junction is long overdue, and as the government commits to building a Britain with world-class infrastructure, we must ensure Cambridgeshire is able to level up too. I am committed to making the Girton interchange accessible from all directions and look forward to working with Highways England and Cambridgeshire County Council to get this project moving again
What am I proposing?
There is currently no eastbound access to the M11 from the A14 or the A428, with drivers forced to travel down the A1303 Madingley Road, which gets heavily congested in rush hours, to access the motorway. The M11 remains accessible from the A14 westbound via the interchange. I am proposing an all-ways junction that would allow cars, buses, and lorries to drive continuously between the A428 and M11, cutting down on congestion.
So far, I have
- written to and met with Roads Minister Baroness Vere to lobby for plans to be part of the 2025-2030 schedule of national road improvements
- met with Highways England officials to make the case for greater improvements
- met with Cambridge County Councillors and transport leaders to help make the case for improvements
- wrote to local Parish Councils to ascertain their support for the scheme
Campaign success
It is great that Highways England have confirmed their plans to assess an upgrade to the Girton Interchange, into an all-ways junction. This upgrade is long overdue and has been the subject of numerous campaigns throughout the years. Personally, I am committed to making the Girton interchange accessible from all directions and look forward to working with Highways England and Cambridgeshire County Council to get this project moving again.
